Rossana Martinez is an interdisciplinary artist working with a variety of materials like seeds, plants, yarn, looms, homemade dyes and inks, photography, and performance. She describes her studio practice as inside and outside. Movement, nutrition, and nature are the focus of her practice. In warm months she spends time outside working with plants in her garden. During the cold months she works on her looms where she weaves ideas found in nature.
Rossana holds an MFA in Sculpture and Printmaking from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, and a BA in Liberal Arts from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. As a constant learner, she received a certification as a trainer from Hunter College where she learned about the importance of daily movement, nutrition, and anatomy. In recent years, she became an Environmental Steward from Rutgers University where she learned about ecosystems, water, trees, native, and invasive plants.
Her projects have been exhibited nationally and internationally in New York City, Australia, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, New Zealand and Puerto Rico. She has received awards from the Brooklyn Arts Council, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and El Diario La Prensa (Mujeres Destacadas Award). Her work has been reviewed in publications, such as The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Brooklyn Rail, The New York Sun, Flavorpill, and Artnet Magazine among others.
